Making people feel AtHome!
Needy families made to feel AtHome! Extreme Makeover: Home Edition features AtHome America HomeWares AtHome America kicked off its participation in the 2007-2008 season of ABC's popular Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on the show's season premiere, which aired Sept. 30. AtHome America has enjoyed continued participation for the two past consecutive seasons. Since the 2005-2006 season of the program, AtHome America donated more than $60,000 to the show. The products have been featured on 17 episodes thus far. AtHome America was proud to contribute to these family's needs as part of our mission to change America one heart, one home and one family at a time, and is looking forward to this exciting season with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition! The Miller Family Aired Nov. 4 AtHome America was proud to donate more than $1,500 in HomeWares to this generous family from Wyoming! They spend numerous hours rescuing pets and adopting animals in need of good homes. However, their home was filled with radon gas, causing chronic asthma and bronchitis in both the family members and the animals. The new home suits the health needs of the kids and allows them to still care for needy animals. The Yazzie Family Aired Oct. 28 For the past five years, the Yazzie family of Arizona had been living in a mobile home that has no running water or heat, and only half the trailer had functioning electricity. Seeing that his family's mobile home had no heat, at 13 years of age, son Garrett tapped his scientific intuition to create a solar heater and a water heater. Garrett's makeshift heating system followed the Navajo principles of living off the land, not wasting anything and recycling everything that the earth has to offer. Their new home follows these same principles, allowing the family to live in comfort while still respecting the land around them. AtHome America was proud to donate more than $2,300 in HomeWares to the Yazzie family. The Carter Family Aired Oct. 21, 2007 AtHome America sent more than $2,800 in HomeWares to the Carter family of Billings, Montana! Julie Carter suffers from a genetic disorder known as Chiari Malformation, as does her 21-year-old daughter, Jade. She fears her other two daughters may have it as well. Julie and Jade have had several brain surgeries costing more than $500,000. Thanks to the staff and crew of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the family is now living in a new home which won't cost them a dime, allowing them to focus on their health and not on the financial burden of a home! The Brown Family Aired Oct. 14, 2007 AtHome America was proud to donate more than $2,300 in HomeWares to this family from Connecticut! Elder Gloria Brown always wanted better for her children, her community and herself. She worked hard to move her family of four out of the projects and, in time, she became a proud homeowner. Just as her life seemed to be coming together, tragedy struck the family not once, but three times. First a flood devastated their home. Then it was destroyed by a fire. The fire was caused by kids throwing firecrackers that nearly destroyed the majority of the house. As if that tragedy were not enough, following the fire, their home was repeatedly robbed and stripped of everything that was left. However, the family is now living in a beautiful home — safe and secure! The Byers Family Aired Oct. 7, 2007 AtHome America donated a dozen After Dark Lanterns — a retail value of more than $500 — to light the walkway into the Japanese healing garden featured in this episode. Diagnosed with pediatric cancer in 2006, seven year old Jenessa Byers decided she wanted to help others find the strength and inspiration to beat cancer. So she and her mother, Rachel, developed a Web page. Her mission is to raise awareness and financial support for pediatric cancer. During the past 12 months, millions of people worldwide have logged on to see this little girl's video blog chronicling her courageous fight against cancer. Jenessa has also raised money, toys and donations for other cancer patients. The Akana Family Aired Sept. 30, 2007 AtHome America donated nearly $2,700 in HomeWares to the Akana family of Hawaii. The family was chosen because of their kindness toward their community. Eleven years ago, Momi Akana was a single mother on welfare when she founded the Kieki O Ka Aina (KOKA) Family Learning Center, a non profit organization that supports the native Hawaiian community. |
